چکیده

Near-global 48 3 48 gridded analysis of marine sea level pressure (SLP) from the Comprehensive Ocean– Atmosphere Data Set for monthly averages from 1854 to 1992 was produced along with its estimated error using a reduced space optimal interpolation method. A novel procedure of covariance adjustment brought the results of the analysis to the consistency with the a priori assumptions on the signal covariance structure. Comparisons with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research global atmosphere reanalysis, with the National Center for Atmospheric Research historical analysis of the Northern Hemisphere SLP, and with the global historical analysis of the U.K. Meteorological Office show encouraging skill of the present product and identifies noninclusion of the land data as its main limitation. Marine SLP pressure proxies are produced for the land stations used in the definitions of the Southern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) indices. Surprisingly, they prove to be competitive in quality with the land station records. Global singular value decomposition analysis of the SLP fields versus sea surface temperature identified three major patterns of their joint large-scale and long-term variability as ‘‘trend,’’ Pacific decadal oscillation, and NAO.

Reduced Space Optimal Analysis for Historical Data Sets: 136 years of Atlantic Sea Surface Temperatures

A computationally e cient method for analyzing meteorological and oceanographic historical data sets has been developed. The method combines data-reduction and least squares optimal estimation. The data-reduction involves computing empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) of the data based on their recent, high-quality portion and using a leading EOF subset as a basis for the analyzed solution and...

Reduced Space Approach to the Optimal Analysis of Historical Marine Observations: Accomplishments, Difficulties, and Prospects

Observed historical climate fields are characterized by comparatively precise data and good coverage in the last few decades, and by poor observational coverage prior to then. The technique of the reduced space optimal analysis of such fields (i.e. estimating them in projections onto a low-dimensional space spanned by the leading patterns of the signal variability) is presented in the context o...

Optimizing Voyage Plan in way of Persian Gulf and Red Sea Using Meteorology and Oceanography Satellite Data

The weather forecast by satellite data is a good guideline for assessment of voyage planning route in order to have safe and economic voyage for shipping. ISO15016, "Guidelines for the assessment of speed and performance by analysis of speed trial data", has been developed by the working group ISO/TC 8/SC 9/WG 2. This paper presents the effects of wave speed & direction, wind speed and directio...

Bayesian peA for Reconstruction of Historical Sea Surface Temperatures

In this work, reconstructions of historical global sea surface temperatures (SST) are performed using Bayesian principal component analysis (PCA). Two PCA models are examined: a model with isotropic noise and a model which takes into account data uncertainty due to sampling errors. Inference is done by variational Bayesian learning. The methods are compared with a more traditional technique, re...

Reconstruction of Monthly Mean Oceanic Sea Level Pressure Based on COADS and Station

An extended reconstruction of monthly mean oceanic historical sea level pressure (SLP) based on Comprehensive Ocean–Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) release-2 observations is produced for the 1854–1997 period. The COADS data are first screened using an adaptive quality-control procedure. Land SLP data from coastal and island stations are used to supplement the COADS data. The SLP anomalies are analy...
